Vein RemovalAs men and women continue to become more body conscious, Vein Removal procedures are continuing to grow in popularity.  Whether you suffer with annoying spider veins or unsightly varicose veins, these red, blue and purple lines can be quite cumbersome.  It has been found that women more often suffer from venous ailments, but many men can have varicose and spider vein problems as well.  Because of this, several vein removal techniques have been developed that allow men and women to remove these unsightly veins for a smoother, more evenly toned complexion.

When men and women suffer with unwanted veins, they will have either spider veins or varicose veins.  Spider veins or telangiectasias are the small thin red or purple veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. These veins commonly appear on the face and the legs and are often caused by sun damage, trauma, certain medications and certain diseases.  While spider veins rarely cause side effects or complications, they can be sometimes unsightly and can cause embarrassment for sufferers.  Spider veins are damaged vessels that are connected to the deeper venous system and while they serve no benefit, the definitely do cause a lot of distress.

Varicose veins are the larger, deeper superficial veins that tend to bulge from the surface of the skin on the upper and lower legs.  Varicose veins can be caused by heredity, gender, trauma, rapid weight gain, hormones and prolonged standing; all of these factors lead to vein damage. When the valves within the veins become damaged, they allow blood to reflux back into the vein which causes the vein to swell.  Over time the expansion causes the vein to bulge and gravitate toward the surface of the skin, resulting in the bluish wormlike appearance of varicose veins.  Unlike spider veins, which are purely cosmetic, varicose veins can cause patient side effects.  Symptoms associated often include achiness, burning, throbbing, cramping, heaviness, itching and skin ulceration.

The following are several treatment types that are available to assist in effective vein removal:

Sclerotherapy: Primarily used for spider veins, the process of sclerotherapy involves injecting a hypertonic saline or other concentrated solution into the damaged vessel in order to irritate the lumen, or inside, of the vein which causes it to swell.  The swelling pushes out the blood and shuts the vein down.  Once closed, the body will naturally break down and absorbs the vein;  several sessions may be required to clear an area.

Laser & IPL: Laser and Intense Pulsed Light devices can effectively treat both spider and varicose veins. The light energy passes through the outer skin layers in order to target and destroy the veins below.  The heat cauterizes the vein so that it can be naturally absorbed by the body.  This innovative treatment is the first to provide a non-invasive approach to vein removal.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy: Beneficial for varicose veins, the process includes making small incisions over the line of the vein where the vein is then pulled out through the incisions with a surgical hook.  The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and the incisions are so small they do not require sutures.

EVLT: EVLT or endovenous laser treatments achieve vein removal by way of an internal laser probe that is inserted into a varicose vein under Doppler imaging.  The laser energy heats the inside of the vein, cauterizing it and causing it to seal shut. Once the blood flow is stopped the vein is then naturally absorbed by the body.

Electrodesiccation: The Electrodesiccation procedure involves sealing and destroying the varicose vein with an electric current.

Surgery: Surgical ligation for varicose vein removal involves the vein being tied in order to cut off the blood supply to the damaged vessel.  Once blood is no longer allowed to enter the vessel, the bulging decreases and the vein becomes less visible.  Unfortunately this procedure has a high rate of reoccurrence.

Vein Stripping: The vein stripping treatment involves ligation and removal to eliminate the vein.  Generally vein is tied off at the upper end and then the remainder of the vein is surgically removed.  This treatment often has significant recovery time and scarring associated with it.

Whether you currently suffer from varicose veins, spider veins or both, any of these vein removal treatments could help.  Research each method thoroughly and speak with your physician before undergoing any vein removal procedures.  Vein removal treatments can help you look and feel your very best.  Find out more about the many vein removal options available.
