Facial vein removal is the process of treating the tiny red lines or flushing noted over the face neck and chest. Sometimes called different names such as spider veins, telangiectasias, spider angiomas or benign vascular lesions, facial veins for some can be an unsightly embarrassment. More often than not these veins have no associated untoward symptoms other than being cosmetically unpleasant. Spider veins over the face occur from a weakening of the elastic fibers within the blood vessel walls. Causes of facial spider veins happen from aging, sun damage, rosacea, hormones from pregnancy or birth control pills, certain autoimmune diseases or even some steroid use. These tiny red or purplish vessels can materialize over the forehead, cheeks, nose, eyelids, neck and chest.
There are a few ways facial spider vein removal can be achieved. Through electrocautery, laser, intense pulsed light or sclerotherapy.
Electrocautery or electrodessication is the process of applying an electric current by way of very tiny needle into the vein. Heat causes the vein to spasm and shut down, thereby eliminating the vein. The process can be quite uncomfortable and can result in a small scab.
Laser facial vein removal is achieved through direct light and heat energy that targets the hemoglobin within the vein. The wavelength of light targets the color within the blood. Heat causes the inside of the vein to swell resulting in its destruction. Side effects from this procedure include discomfort, bruising, hyper-pigmentation, swelling, and in rare instances scarring. Treatments are generally spaced 6-8 weeks apart and 2-4 sessions are often needed for clearing an adequate number of vessels.
IPL or intense pulsed light for facial veins removal utilizes a broad spectrum of light, as opposed to focused light, to heat and destroy the dilated blood vessels. Side effects are similar to that of laser treatment however bruising is a rare occurrence. Treatment sessions are spaced at 4-8 week intervals until redness is gone. The IPL can also smooth skin and fade brown pigmentation.
Sclerotherapy can also be used for facial spider vein removal. This is the case when the veins are larger, often on the nose or sides of the face. Sclerotherapy requires the use of a small gauge needle to be inserted into the vein while a Sclerosing solution is injected. Side effects can include redness, bruising, blisters, scarring, hyperpigmentation and telangectatic matting (very tiny red veins that appear almost like a flushing to the area).
Removal of facial veins is a simple in office procedure that can be performed by a physician or his staff. Laser and sclerotherapy treatments can cost from $150-$400 depending upon the treatment. Usually minimal discomfort and side effects make this cosmetic procedure an attractive option for those with facial veins and redness. |
