Spider Vein Removal

A variety of treatments can be used for spider vein removal.  Spider veins commonly appear on the face and legs as small thin clusters of blue, red or purple veins, close to the surface of the skin.    Sometimes known as telangiectasias, spider veins are connected to the deep venous system however these superficial veins serve no benefit.  Causes can vary from heredity, hormones, weight gain, trauma, prolonged standing or even certain medications.  The veins can appear as a true spider shape, tiny branch like shapes or a simple linear shape.   Symptoms associated with the veins range from aching and burning to swelling and cramping, often at night.

For spider veins, removal can be done with sclerotherapy, laser treatments or IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments.  Some surgical vein procedures may also eliminate spider veins however this is secondary to the removal of a larger varicose or feeder vein.

Sclerotherapy is a popular method to assist in the elimination of spider veins.  A very small needle is injected superficially into the tiny vein followed by a small amount of an irritant solution.  The result is an internal swelling of the vein, causing it to shut itself down.  Once shut down the body eliminates it naturally.  Several treatments can be required to remove the veins.  Side effects can include redness swelling, bruising, scabs, scarring and skin ulcerations as well as allergic reaction to treatment solutions.

Laser spider vein removal can be done with a number of aesthetic lasers.  Lasers use high intensity light energy that can accurately direct this energy at the problem vein.  The heated vein swells, pushing the blood out of the vessel.  With no blood to supply the vein, the body then breaks down the vessel making it disappear.  Intense pulsed light or photo facial, as well as pulse dye and Nd:YAG lasers are very effective in eliminating spider veins, especially facial veins.

A consult with your dermatologist or certified laser skin specialist will help to determine which treatment is best for you.
